Three Month Ashtanga Yoga Challenge
(sept 2-3, Oct 7-8, Nov 4-5)

In this program you will learn how to build a manageable self- practice that you can do both at home and at our yoga studio.

You will learn the counting system and chants of the Ashtanga Yoga system, which keeps you focused and engaged in your daily Yoga practice.

You will have a supportive community of fellow practitioners plus one weekend per month dedicated to in-depth yoga study and reflection at the wonderful Hattibaan Resort.

How does it work?

You join this challenge by committing to:

  • Two weekly classes taught by your Ashtanga yoga teacher at our studio in Thamel or Patan
  • You also commit to doing two-three self-practice assignments per week in your home (about 20-30 min).
  • You join us one weekend per month for a Practice intensive workshop in Hattibaan resort in Pharping taught by your Ashtanga teacher.
  • Retreats will be head Sept 2-3, Oct 7-8, and Nov 4-5
  • Cost is 15,000 Nepali Rupees all inclusive on Twin sharing basis  ( single rooms are 18, 00)

The method

In the traditional style of Ashtanga yoga you are taught to practice a set series of movements in coordinated with your breath (vinyasas). You learn the series (by heart) by counting yourself through each sequence of breath-movements. Generally we extend the body on the inhale and flex (bend) on the exhale. This creates a flowing organic series of movements, which enables you to engage deeply with your body and mind. By focusing on (counting) every breath and movement you take, you gradually build the strength and concentration span to sustain a full 90 minutes session. The result is that you become a yoga practitioner, a person in charge of your own practice. With time and patience you will master even the most challenging postures – all while remaining calm and connected with your breath. This releases deep inner tension, increases your tolerance for stress and gives a feeling of “lightness” to the body. On a physical level the practice strengthens the core of the body and brings about a perfect balance between strength and flexibility.

This method of guided self-practice, which is the hallmark of Ashtanga Yoga is called “Mysore style,” named after Pattabhi Jois´ hometown. Most students who have started to practice in this way become so fond of their practice and their “sense of flow” that they never want to revert to a uniform lead class!

Your Teacher

Ellen Johannesen, born in Norway, has been practicing Ashtanga for more than 20 years and is now a third series practitioner. She first visited Mysore in 1997 and learnt the intermediate series from Pattabhi Jois. She was authorized by Sharath in 2007 and renewed her authorization receiving level II in 2014. In 2004 –5 she completed a two year, 500 hours TTC with John Scott in Cornwall.

In 2002 she co-founded the first Ashtanga studio In Oslo, Norway, Ashtanga Yoga Oslo, where she was the principal teacher in charge of the Mysore program. She has also taught for among others Nordic black Theatre School, Norwegian Dancers Union, Puro Yoga Studio, Sri Yoga, Sri Lanka and Nosen Yoga Retreat Center, Norway.

A growing interest in Buddhism and Eastern Philosophy brought her to Bylakuppe, South India, where she spent 2 years living in a Tibetan Monastery. She then moved to Kathmandu where she, completed a Tibetan translator-training course and earned a BA degree in Buddhist studies and Himalayan Languages from R.Y.I, Kathmandu University. Ellen is currently working on her MA degree. She teaches Ashtanga classes, workshops and retreats for Pranamaya Yoga, Kathmandu.
