A short, spectacular flight to Lukla’s tiny airstrip brings us into the clear mountain air and lush green hillsides of the Khumbu: home of the Sherpa, our hosts here. Following the gushing glacial waters of the DudhKhosi through prayer flagged decked villages and rhododendron forest we trek up to the Sherpa capital, Namche Bazaar high up in alpine meadows beneath the snowy peaks of the world’s highest mountains.
From Namche on to Thame at 3800m (12,467 ft) where we’ll spend a couple of days in practise and exploring. There is much to do and see at Thame: the ethereal ancient monastery; the hamlets up towards the Nangpa La and Cho Oyu; maybe climb a small peak or finding a peaceful plateau to work through some asanas under blue Himalayan skies.
Leaving Thame we ascend by an airy mountain path to the high point of our trek: YMH Kongde at 4200m. We have a day to enjoy stunning views over the entire Everest range before heading steeply down to TokTokre joining the river to overnight at YMH Phakding. Our final day in the hills is the short climb up to Lukla from where we fly out to Kathmandu.

For the yoga: Nepal is an inspiring destination for the study and practice of Yoga. This land has nested the development of the Yoga tradition over centuries. Now students from around the world come to Nepal to explore and expand in the same serene landscape.
We invite you to explore yourself, because that is what yoga was created for. Yoga is a tool to clean, strengthen and invigorate our hearts, bodies, and minds. It is a system, philosophy, psychology, body practice, and a quest. And everyone is invited.
The best position to be in when you decide to begin a yogic journey is the place you inhabit right now. Bring yourself, your fears and your dreams, your strengths and your weaknesses. Yoga does not require you to pretend to be something you are not, nor that you master something before you have begun. Fluency will come with time and practice. Yoga assumes you have not found your destination. Because yoga is a vehicle and a journey: take a ride, we will teach you how to drive.
For the trekking: you should have a reasonable level of fitness and be in good health. If you swim or use a gym regularly, you run or bike you’ll enjoy this trek’s physical challenges. You don’t need to be a mountaineer but are probably someone who regularly enjoys day hikes in your local hills and you may have done some trekking before.
The trip will run with a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 people.
A Typical Day on the EYE trail
Wake up to a hot drink brought to your room by our lovely Sherpa team. Come down for an early meditation session or morning yoga class. We’ll usually have an hour or so of group yoga practice. This might be in one of the lodge lounges or often outside in our private gardens, some days early, some days a little later.Pack your bags and get ready for the day then enjoy a leisurely breakfast.The porters will arrive as you’re breakfasting to carry your trek bag up to our next overnight stop.
Then it’s time for trek. We usually walk for an hour or so before taking a break and of course there are lots of wonderful views, people and interesting stop opportunities along the way too. We may reach our next lodge in time for a late lunch or have a picnic on the way. We check into our rooms and relax for a while. During the afternoon you might feel like exploring the local village and hills or just having some ‘me’ time. You might feel like a massage or other treatment from our partner spa centre.
We re-group again for drinks, discussion and reflections around the fire before dinner.
The essence of Everest Yoga Experience is about re-balancing and re-connecting. This means:
- Daily yoga sessions to purify body and mind and experience yogic lifestyle
- Fantastic trekking that is exhilarating but not exhausting;
- Some time to yourself as well as time with others;
- Taught group meditation alongside space for self- practice;
- Lots of locally-sourced, beautifully cooked food that’s tasty but not heavy
Exploration, practice and play days:
Each day will be formatted differently according to the needs of the group and its members, but there will be a daily yoga practice and / or meditation session.We’ll also offer a guided walk option and some alone time. We’ll balance the structured activities with space where we don’t schedule anything in particular: it’s up to you what happens – snooze, practice, explore, chat… whatever takes your fancy.

Yoga teacher on the trek
Born in Norway, Ellen Johannesen has taught yoga for more than 17 years and is one of the world’s small number of authorized Ashtanga yoga teachers.
From a career as a contemporary dancer, Ellen made a transition into the yoga world. Utilizing her knowledge of body and mind to teach the Ashtanga yoga system she opened her own studio in Oslo, Norway – the first Ashtanga studio in Norway. A growing interest in Buddhism brought her to Kathmandu where she is currently earning a degree in Buddhist studies and Himalayan languages from KTM university, while teaching for Pranamaya Yoga.
Ellen: “Yoga, is a continuous investigation into mental and physical habits, a journey to confront deep rooted patterns and explore new possibilities, – the good news being: it can all change! My interest has always been in exploring the connections between mind and body, whether through yoga, dance, philosophy or meditation.
This environment, which for centuries has been the home of great spiritual adepts, is the perfect place for practice; here we have the support of limitless sky, the vastness of the mountains as well as the many cultural and spiritual landmarks. In this context we will take a closer look at Buddhist culture and philosophy and also how to practice meditation. Meditation and philosophy are integral parts of yogic life. When you apply them to your Yoga practice you are “practicing” rather than “exercising.” They transform your mind the way yoga asanas transforms your body. Then body and mind will become more flexible and healthy!”
The Yoga will be Ashtanga style, and is suitable for all levels. If you are an experienced first or second series practitioner, you are welcome to join us for self practice sessions. If you are a complete beginner we will lead you step-by-step through the basic elements of the practice.

Porter welfare: Nepal is a country where carrying is part of the traditional way of

Yeti Mountain Home properly equipped and trained (in health and safety, basic medicine etc). In addition YMH porters have access to the PasangLamu Foundation Hospital at Lukla (supported by YMH).
As Sherpa people we have a great desire to protect our environment as ‘Guardians of the Himalayas’ while encouraging tourists to explore our wonderful world.

In all of our lodges water is heated by solar power, and electricity comes directly from local hydro projects. In Phakding we have our own hydro plant and the electricity generated is shared with the local village. Eat local: much of the fresh produce you eat is from the local village, grown by our neighbour or by ourselves.
Being deep in the mountains we have most goods carried in and by doing so we employ a great number of local men and women. Ninety per cent of our lodge staff are locally employed. Similarly, our guides and the team with you on the trail are all Nepalese and the vast majority again are from this region.
Perhaps our largest contribution goes to the Pasang Lhamu Mountaineering Foundation established in 1993. Pasang Lamu Sherpa was the first woman to summit Mount Everest although tragically she died on the descent. She holds a very dear place within our hearts at Yeti Mountain Home.
